COLLEGE COURSES

I started a page of links to UK colleges and other centres offering courses in Music Technology and related disciplines while still active with the Music Producers Guild Education Committee.

Please remember that just because I have a link to a college on this page, this does not mean that I (or the MPG) have looked at their courses and facilities and can recommend them. As a member of the Music Producers Guild UK Education Committee I was involved in serious discussions about how music industry professionals can raise the standards of these courses in the UK to the benefit of both students and the industry who may wish to employ them when they graduate. We participated in joint course validations with the music industry body the APRS, but this process was stalled somewhat due to the internal problems of that organisation. Please visit the MPG website to find latest news on this and for more information on its work with colleges, which includes one-off visits tours of colleges nationwide by leading professionals, giving students the rare chance to pick the brains of top producers and engineers about anything from contracts to compression.

Degree and Postgraduate level Courses

School of Electronics, University of Glamorgan (Pontytpridd, South Wales) have a B.Sc in Music Technology. I may be biased here as a friend of mine runs the course, but staff are very motivated here and I have taught here myself and enjoyed using the studio.

London College of Music and Media, Thames Valley University (West London) offers degrees in Music Technology Music and Multimedia Technology Popular Music Performance and others. This is one college I have visited (in 2002) and I was very impressed with the standard of studio provision, both in build quality, standard of equipment and sheer number of studios available. Staff also seemed to have good industry experience and were very motivated to provide students with thorough background in the subject area.
